This bilingual course will be conducted in both English and Mandarin.

  • Concrete examples for each domain of knowledge in basic commercial interpreting such as business networking, discussions, and overseas immersion programmes;
  • Basic skills and practice in commercial interpreting;

Lesson Plan

This course consists of 9 modules:

Day 1: Introduction to Basic Interpreting Techniques and Linguistic Differences in English and Chinese
  • Basic interpreting techniques and linguistic differences in English and Chinese to prepare students for actual business interpreting.
Day 1: Listening and Memory Training in Interpretation
  • Overview of the basic principles for listening and memory training in
    interpretation.
  • Hands-on practice on how to capture information quickly and
    interpreting them accurately to capture the essence of the messages.
Day 1: Notes-taking in Interpretation
  • Overview of the basic principles for note-taking in interpretation
  • Hands-on practice for commercial interpreting and tips for shorthand
    note taking.
Day 1: Basic Interpretation of Business Networking in a meeting environment
  • Overview of the basic interpreting principles and examples of business discussions, meetings and conferences data for critique and evaluation, business networking.
Day 1: Basic Interpretation of Meetings and Conferences
  • Hands-on interpretation practice for real life examples in business
    discussions and conferences
  • Feedback on practice
Day 2: Introduction to Basic Business Interpretation and Linguistic Differences in English and Chinese
  • Introduction to basic business interpreting principles, grammatical standards and differences in English and Chinese to prepare students for actual business interpreting.
Day 2: Basic Interpretation of Business Discussion
  • Overview of the basic interpreting principles and examples of business
    discussions
  • Hands-on practice for interpretation in business discussions
  • Feedback from instructor
Day 2: Basic Interpretation for purposes of overseas Immersion Trips (Part 1)
  • Overview of the basic interpretation required for overseas business immersion trips
Day 2: Basic Interpretation for purposes of overseas Immersion Trips (Part 2)
  • Hands-on practice for interpretation in overseas immersion trips
  • Feedback from instructor

Certification

A Certificate of Performance will be awarded to participants who achieve at least 75% attendance and pass all required assessment(s).

A Certificate of Participation will be awarded to participants who meet the 75% attendance requirement but did not pass all required assessment(s).

Course fee is payable upon acceptance. It is inclusive of 7% GST and subject to review.
