Explore the basis of human diseases and equips learners with
with a broad understanding of the practices of human pathology

Learning Outcomes

You will be equipped with a broad understanding of the practices of human pathology from this course, including:
  • Correlate anatomical structures of various organs in cardiovascular, immune, endocrine and renal systems with their functions.
  • Explain how physiological processes lead to the normal functioning of the human body.
  • Describe specific features of various cardiovascular diseases, immune and autoimmune disorders, diabetes, renal failures etc and their clinical and pathophysiologic significance
  • Describe physiologic and pathologic presentations of the diseases through case studies

Lesson Plan

This course consists of 4 modules:

Cardiovascular System
  • Introduction
    • Anatomy of the circulatory system and its functions in relation to other body systems
  •  Etiology, pathogenesis, sign & symptoms and treatments:
    • Coronary Heart Diseases
    • Atherosclerosis
    • Angina pectoris
    • Myocardial infarction (MI)
    • Stroke
    • Hypertension
Immune system
  • Introduction to Immune System
  • Etiology, pathogenesis, sign & symptoms and treatments:
    •  Autoimmune disorders (eg: Rheumatoid Arthritis, SLE, Multiple sclerosis)
    •  Immune disorder – Immunodeficiency (eg: AIDS) (drugs and descriptions)
Endocrine System
  • Introduction to Endocrine System
  • Etiology, pathogenesis, signs & symptoms and treatments:
    • Diabetes Mellitus
Renal Systems
  • Components of the excretory system to their functions
  • Role of the kidneys in fluid and electrolyte regulation
  • Etiology, pathogenesis, signs & symptoms and treatments:
    • Acute/Chronic renal failure

Trainer's Profile

Dr Gan Chye Chung

Dr Gan Chye Chung graduated with MBBS degree and is presently a medical lecturer at University of Malaya. Concurrently, he also serves in the Division of Nephrology, University Malaya Medical Centre, Kuala Lumpur as an Internist and Renal Fellow, providing clinical services in the field of internal medicine and nephrology. He holds professional memberships of Royal College of Physician (London), Royal College of Physician (Edinburgh), Academy of Medicine (Malaysia), Malaysian Society of Transplantation, American Society of Nephrology and Malaysian Society of Nephrology. His teaching portfolio includes teaching clinical medicine and nephrology to medical and nursing students. He also undertakes research projects and participates in collaborative international clinical trials in the field of Nephrology.

Certification

A Certificate of Performance will be awarded to participants who achieve at least 75% attendance and pass all required assessment(s).

A Certificate of Participation will be awarded to participants who meet the 75% attendance requirement but did not pass all required assessment(s).
