Course Information

A one-day workshop designed for tour guides to use community mapping as a tool to unlock hidden stories in the local heritage and cultural sites by conducting in-depth interviews with the residents or shop owners of local heritage/cultural sites.

The course will be the first in the industry and the networking session to share insights after the practical session will be invaluable to all the participants.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understand what is community mapping and how to use this to uncover rich and authentic stories from the community (e.g. residents and shop owners) living in the heritage/cultural sites
  • Interviewing techniques to probe and to extract insightful and interesting stories to be built into the travel itinerary
  • How to weave in the stories that are mapped to the rich community history and heritage in the local heritage/cultural sites into unique tour experiences using an itinerary template.

Lesson Plan

This course consists of 8 modules:

Day 1 (9.00 am to 10.30am)

Introduction to Community Mapping (Lecture)
The trainer will introduce the concept and explain how to conduct on-site interviews with the residents and shop owners. Some case studies will be shared to encourage participants to find out more during the practical session, especially stories on the vanishing trades.

Day 1 (10.30 am to 11.00am)

Travelling to Jalan Bear & Little India. Participants will travel to Jalan Besar and Little India. (Transport not included)

Day 1 (11.00 am to 1.00pm)

Community Mapping in Action (Practical)
The participants will be facilitated and visit Jalan Besar and Little India. They will take the opportunity to visit sites less popular and conduct an interview to gather stories.

Day 1 (2.00pm to 4.00pm)

Community Mapping in Action (Practical)

Travelling back to Weworks
Participants will travel back to Weworks.
(Transport not included)

Day 1 (4.30pm to 6.00pm)

Presentation & Sharing (Tutorial)
Participants will discuss and present their findings in groups. Each group will share their insights after the practical session. This will be a good opportunity for the tour guides to network and share information. Trainers will review and share with participants.

Trainer's Profile

Rachel Chen

Rachel Chen has over 12 years of professional experience in the arts and heritage sector. She specialised in audience engagement and interpretive content development with the National Gallery Singapore and National Heritage Board. In 2018, she launched a series of Passion Tours
with the Singapore Tourism Board and has been partnering corporate clients to curate meaningful tour experiences anchored in history and visual arts.


She has been teaching with the Polytechnic since 2016 and is currently an adjunct lecturer for the Diploma in Arts Business Management course.

Certification

In-class assessments.

Certificate of Performance will be awarded to participants who achieve at least 75% attendance and pass assessments.
