Course Objectives

The course objective is to enable the RNs to upskill in the area of managing patient safety in the operating room. The course seeks to equip the nurses to improve the standard of care provided to surgical patients and their families. The trained perioperative nurses will be confident in their clinical abilities and have a strong commitment to quality patient care and continuing education. The graduates will be able to:
  • function within the scope and practice for a Perioperative Registered Nurse;
  • practice in a way that is legally and ethically justified  and protect the rights and confidentiality of the patients;
  • perform a comprehensive health assessment and apply critical thinking skills in making sound diagnostic reasoning; clinical judgement and decision making;
  • apply nursing process in assessment; diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation for optimal patient care;
  • apply effective communication, interpersonal skills and collaborative relationship with other healthcare professionals to ensure continuity of care;
  • reflect on practice outcome and apply evidence based knowledge and technical skills in operating theatre practice;
  • provide safe, competent and holistic nursing care to achieve effective surgical patient outcome;
  • provide individualized health education to patients/families/care givers of the surgical patient;
  • provide guidance to diploma students or junior staff during their attachment in the operating room; and
  • be resilient in the face of adversity.

Course Description

The Advanced Diploma in Perioperative Nursing (ADPO1) is a part time CET course, consist of the following modules:

Tan Hong Yong

Dr. Tan is a medical professional and educator with a unique blend of expertise in both medicine and economics. Holding an MBBS and a Bachelor of Science in Economics, he has developed a multidisciplinary approach to healthcare and education.

With nearly a decade of medical work experience, Dr. Tan understands the complexities and demands of the changing healthcare environment. This extensive clinical background allows him to bring practical insights and real-world applications into his teaching. He teaches full-time and part-time nursing and healthcare-related courses, focusing on health assessment, anatomy and physiology, human biosciences, applied pathophysiology and pharmacology, and biology. His teaching approach lays the foundational knowledge that encourages his learners to think critically and reason so they can provide better care in a dynamic healthcare environment.

He has applied his leadership skills and economic acumen to be instrumental in aligning educational strategies with industry needs, ensuring the modules he is leading are both relevant and forward-thinking.

Hazel Lim Wai Ling

Hazel is a nursing professional and educator with a Master of Public Health and a Bachelor of Health Science (Nursing). She brings academic nursing foundations and research-related experiences to her role as a polytechnic lecturer, where she has been shaping the minds of future nurses since 2011.

With a five-year diverse work experience in dermatology, renal, and general wards as a nurse, and completed later by several years of research as a research nurse and research assistant, Hazel contributed to impactful studies that have advanced her understanding of various healthcare fields.

Hazel has made contributions to research, particularly in the areas of dementia and healthcare technology. Her published works include "Knowledge and Attitudes towards Dementia among the General Public in Singapore: A Comparative Analysis," featured in Dementia and Geriatric Cognitive Disorders in April 2023, and "Introducing a Healthcare-Assistive Robot in Primary Care: A Preliminary Questionnaire Survey," published in Frontiers in Robotics and AI in May 2023. These publications reflect her dedication to exploring innovative solutions and addressing public health issues.

Sabita Zakir Husain

Dr. Sabita is a seasoned medical professional with a rich background in both clinical practice and healthcare education. She holds an MBBS and advanced qualifications, including a Specialist Diploma in Biotechnology, a Postgraduate Diploma in Higher Education, and an Advanced Certificate in Learning and Performance, combining her medical expertise with strong educational skills.

With over a decade of clinical experience as a medical officer in three different countries, Dr. Sabita has provided comprehensive care to patients across multiple specialties, serving both adult and pediatric populations in various healthcare settings.

In her role as an educator, Dr. Sabita is passionate about sharing her extensive knowledge and experience with future healthcare professionals. She teaches full-time and part-time courses, specialising in anatomy and physiology, applied pathophysiology, pharmacology, and human biosciences. Lee Suyin Pamelia Joan

Pamelia is a Perioperative Nursing Specialist and Educator with an extensive background in operating room techniques, patient care management, and education. With a career spanning over three decades, Pamelia has dedicated herself to the advancement of perioperative nursing practices and the cultivation of future healthcare professionals.

Pamelia began her journey as a Registered Nurse licensed by the Singapore Nursing Board in 1986 and has remained an active practitioner ever since. Her passion for perioperative care led her to pursue a post-basic certification in Perioperative Nursing in 1990, solidifying her expertise in the field. Throughout her career, she has amassed a wealth of experience in various surgical specialties, including General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Anaesthesia Care, Paediatric Surgery, Plastic Surgery, ENT Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Neurosurgery, and Trauma Cases.

Not content with merely practicing, Pamelia has also played pivotal roles in shaping the landscape of perioperative care. As an educator, she has been instrumental in developing curriculum and teaching materials for Advanced Diploma programmes in Perioperative Nursing. Her dedication to education extends to mentoring new staff, designing assessments, and crafting enriching learning experiences for nursing students at various levels.

Pamelia’s academic journey reflects her commitment to lifelong learning and professional development. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing Management from Curtin University in 2000, a Post Graduate Diploma in Higher Education in 2012, followed by a Master of Education in Curriculum & Teaching from the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University in 2021.

Noteworthy among her accomplishments is her pivotal role in establishing the Central Supply Sterilisation Department (CSSD) and Theatre Sterile Supply Unit (TSSU) for Changi General Hospital (CGH), demonstrating her leadership and innovation in healthcare management and in National University Hospital (NUH) Operating Theatre, an evident-based practice research on time versus event-related sterility which led to publish a paper in the SNA.

With her wealth of experience, unwavering dedication, and passion for education, Pamelia continues to be a driving force in advancing perioperative nursing practices and shaping the next generation of healthcare professionals.


Lu Mengya

Lu Mengya’s qualifications include a nursing diploma, an Advanced Diploma in Perioperative Nursing, and BCLS+CPR certification as a chief instructor. She holds a Bachelor of Health Science in Nursing, a Master of Education and an Advanced Certificate in Training and Assessment (ACTA). The qualifications equip her with necessary skills and knowledge to train and shape future healthcare professionals while staying current with the latest medical advancements and pedagogical methods.

Mengya is a registered nurse with a valid Singapore Nursing Board license, specialising in perioperative nursing. Her expertise lies in the perioperative care of patients undergoing surgical procedures. With 11 years of experience in both restructured and private hospitals in Singapore, Mengya’s roles have encompassed a range of crucial responsibilities, from preoperative preparation to intraoperative support and postoperative care.

Mengya brings a wealth of expertise to her role in teaching PET and CET courses including “Diploma in Nursing”, “Advanced Diploma in Perioperative Nursing”, and “Career Conversion Programme for Registered Nurses” (Diploma) at Ngee Ann Polytechnic, School of Health Sciences. Specialising in perioperative nursing, her practical experience in preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative care significantly enhances both PET and CET curricula. With qualifications in nursing and education, complemented by BCLS+CPR certification, Mengya seamlessly integrates theory and practice. Serving as a BCLS chief instructor, she ensures students are well-equipped for the dynamic healthcare landscape, contributing to the cultivation of skilled and adaptable healthcare professionals.

This module provides students with an overview of the perioperative nursing consideration in various surgical procedures. Perioperative nursing is a team concept and includes receiving the surgical patient to the operating room, planning for the position for surgery, skin preparation, choice of instrumentation and anticipating the sequence and needs of surgery.
Advanced Perioperative Nursing Science Ii (NP-012132)
This module provides students with an overview of the perioperative nursing consideration in specialised surgical procedures. Perioperative nursing is a team concept and includes receiving the surgical patient to the operating room, planning for the position for surgery, skin preparation, choice of instrumentation and anticipating the sequence and needs of surgery.
Fundamentals in Perioperative Nursing I (NP-012129)
This module will provide the student with an overview of the natural sciences pertaining to the practice of nursing in the operating theatre and its environment. It explores scientific concepts underpinning the practice and allows the student to have an overall analysis of knowledge and skills required by the operating theatre clinical specialist. It includes the theory and techniques for the preparation of sterile supplies as well as planning for the surgical procedure.
The student will also have an understanding of ethical and legal issues pertaining to perioperative practice and understand the role of a perioperative nurse as a patient advocate to provide safe and competent care for the surgical patient.
Fundamentals in Perioperative Nursing II (NP-012130)
This module will provide the student with an understanding of the nursing implications and skills required for a patient undergoing anaesthesia in the perioperative setting. Students will be able recognize complications and manage emergency situations for the surgical patient.

The module will also equip students with understanding of the therapeutic needs of patients experiencing surgical intervention. It includes basic theory and skills for counselling to prepare the student to manage challenging situations in the perioperative setting.
Post-Diploma Certificate in Applied Sciences in Advanced Nursing
Applied Pathophysiology and Pharmacology (NP-012125)
This module aims to provide students with knowledge and understanding of pathophysiologic and pharmacologic considerations. This module will enable the students to gain a better understanding of underlying disease processes and relate the basic principles of pharmacology and the nursing process to selected drugs and their therapeutic use.
Care Management Across Life Span (NP-012127)
This module focuses on the current trends that affect the healthcare and financial systems in Singapore. Emphasis will be placed on integrated care, collaboration and coordination to provide continuity of care of patients with special needs in a variety of healthcare settings. The principles and concepts of palliative care, case management, disease management, medical-surgical nursing and transitional care will be discussed.
Evidence-Based Practice (NP-012126)
This module aims to provide the students with the knowledge and application underpinnings the evidence-based practice. Based on the 5 steps of evidence-based practice, the students will learn to convert information into an answerable clinical question (ask), track down best evidence for answering the question (acquire), critically appraise evidence (appraise), integrate evidence into clinical decision making (application), and evaluate and seek ways to improve the next time (audit).
Health Assessment and Clinical Decision Making (NP-012124)
This module aims to provide the students with comprehensive foundation and principles of health assessment in clinical nursing practice. It will also provide comprehensive skills necessary to obtain data through complete health history taking and physical examination. Emphasis will be placed on the holistic and comprehensive approach of assessment. Variations of normality in the older persons will be taken into considerations in the assessment findings. Together with the relevant laboratory data, this module also equips the students with necessary knowledge underpinning the skills to make informed clinical decisions.
Post-Diploma Certificate in Clinical Practicum in Advanced Nursing
Clinical Practicum in Advanced Nursing (NP-012128)
The module provides the student opportunities to synthesize and apply the knowledge and practical skills learned in Post-Diploma Certificate 1 (Health Assessment and Clinical Decision Making, Applied Pathophysiology and Pharmacology, Evidence-Based Practice and Care Management Across Life Span) to the 2-week of broad-based Clinical Practicum in Advanced Nursing module. The students will be assigned to one of the following clinical settings that is different from their specialty attachment.
