Course Information

With the ongoing digital revolution and advancements in technology, organizations can dramatically improve their effectiveness by collecting and analysing insights from relevant data. What is needed to equip yourself to succeed with applied data science in your field of work?

Data Science Bootcamp equips participants with the knowledge and skills of data science, using R as the core programming language so that they can harness the predictive power of data to solve interesting problems. Through the Bootcamp, participants will also be equipped with Tableau, and acquire a design thinking mindset to achieve decision intelligence.

This advanced part-time course is for Professionals, Managers, Executives, and Technicians (PMETs) to jump-start a career in data science.

Learning Outcomes

You will be equipped with programming tools used to analyze and visualize data. You will learn and apply concepts related to statistics for data, machine learning algorithms and design thinking. While computer systems can execute calculations meticulously, this course aims to develop participants who are capable of leading data-led projects responsibly, through the use of decision intelligence to turn information into better actions.

Data wrangling & statistics for data
  • Code with the R programming language using RStudio and RMarkdown

Trainer's Profile

Loh Wai Tuck

Loh Wai Tuck graduated from National University of Singapore with a Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical) and a Master of Technology (Software Engineering). 

Prior to teaching in the Polytechnic, Wai Tuck has 14 years of extensive experience in the software industry. He has worked in multiple IT projects (Geographical Information Systems, Office Automation projects and turnkey projects), undergoing the full software development life cycle. He was a senior consultant in Geographical Information Systems, and worked in countries like Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Germany and England. Wai Tuck has also worked in the corporate risk & review management division; he has conducted independent reviews on software development projects to identify risks (financial and legal risks) in projects, monitoring the project costs and delivery milestones. 

In Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Wai Tuck has taught various IT subjects (Database, Programming, IT applications like Photoshop and MS Office products) and Mathematics. In recent years, he has also taught short courses for adult learners in Data Science (using R programming language) and Data Analytics (using Excel, Tableau and R programming language) related courses. Wai Tuck was attached to GovTech Data Science & Artificial Intelligence division, where he was involved in data cleaning and data preparation using Python. 

Karen Tan

Educator, Data Analyst, Innovator, Certified Adult Trainer 

Karen is a youth-adult education specialist with over a decade of experience in crafting and delivering transformative training programmes in the field of data science, engineering mathematics, and innovation. She is adept at leveraging a unique blend of industry expertise, engaging communication, and innovative teaching methods to drive participant success. Committed to inspiring and empowering individuals and teams to achieve their full potential. 

In Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Karen leads the Data Science Bootcamp for adult learners, teaches Design Thinking & Innovation to youths, and mentors multiple interdisciplinary team projects.  

Outside of Ngee Ann Polytechnic, she is involved in diverse business and analytical projects, including analysing the Quality of Life of Singaporean Youths and Children in a Tableau tournament, enabling a research trial for an Autonomous Vehicle research project, investigating AI courseware and learning outcomes that prepare for the emerging industry needs, etc. 

Karen holds an M.Sc. in Management of Technology (National University of Singapore) and a B.Eng. with honours in Mechanical Engineering (Nanyang Technological University). She is an ACTA-certified Adult Educator (Singapore Training & Development Association) and has received additional certifications such as the LUMA Practitioner certification, Data Champions Bootcamp (certified track) and Algoritma Design Science Train-the-Trainer for both Data Visualisation and Machine Learning Specialisations, etc. 

Dr Ricky Chua

Dr Ricky Chua is a trainer at the School of Interdisciplinary Studies, Ngee Ann Polytechnic. He has an active interest in applying data science to investments and financial trading. An educator since 1999, Ricky has taught a myriad of subjects ranging from investing, to materials science, to mathematics, to data science. His one biggest passion is in teaching and learning, and he is known for his highly energetic presence in class. Combined with the use of learning activities that make learning applicable and fun, Ricky makes the special effort to ensure all his students are entertained as they learn.

Zhang Ziwei

Zhang Ziwei’s domain of expertise lies in Marine Naval Architecture and Data Analytics. 

Ziwei presently serves as a trainer at Ngee Ann Polytechnic within the School of Engineering's Mechanical Engineering Division, specialising in Marine & Offshore courses. Her teaching primarily revolves around software applications, including AutoCAD, NAPA, AVEVA, SM3D, MOSES, and CADMATIC.  

Additionally, Ziwei is involved in Data Analytic projects, focusing on Tableau Dashboards. She also plays a key role in teaching the Personalised Learning Pathway at Ngee Ann Polytechnic, which includes a minor in Data Analytics utilising Tableau and Python. 

Certification

Certificate of Performance will be awarded to participants who achieve at least 75% attendance and pass assessments.


Entry Requirements

Applicants with any of the following qualifications are invited to apply for the course:
  1. Preferably with a local Polytechnic Diploma or recognised Degree (with English as the medium of instruction) in business, engineering, technology, or any other disciplines with at least one (1) year of relevant work experience.
  2. Applicants should have an analytical mindset and an interest to learn problem solving with algorithms and data structures.
  3. Applicants should have basic digital literacy and be willing to acquire programming skills

Important: Students enrolled in the course are expected to bring their personal laptops with the Windows 10 operating system.

Course Fees

Funding period for this course is from 1 Oct 2021 to 30 Sep 2024.

SkillsFuture Credit
All Singaporeans aged 25 and above can use their $500 SkillsFuture Credit from the government to pay for a wide range of approved skills-related courses. Visit the SkillsFuture Credit website to choose from the courses available on the Training Exchange course directory.

Union Training Assistance Programme (UTAP)
