About Course

Course Objectives

The large-scale production of biologics usually is achieved through the cloning and expression of the gene of interest. The PDC in Molecular & Microbiological Analyses (PDC-MMA) covers essential techniques and knowledge from cloning, recombinant protein expression, protein purification techniques and analysis, to aseptic techniques, and contamination control which are integral to the production and analysis of modern biopharmaceuticals.

Course Description

The Post Diploma Certificate in Molecular & Microbiological Analyses - Part of Advanced Diploma in Medical and Pharmaceutical Technology (ADMP1) is a part-time CET course, consist of the following modules:
1. Cell & Molecular Biology (45 hrs)
2. Microbiology (36 hrs)
3. Pharmaceutical Microbiology (36 hrs)
4. Applied Genomics & Proteomics (36 hrs)

Post-Diploma Certificate in Molecular & Microbiological Analyses
Applied Genomics & Proteomics (NP-013213)
This module provides a deeper understanding into the various analytical tools from protein purification, analysis, quantitation to contaminant detection. Participants will receive hands-on training on the design of experiments to extract and purify proteins from cells, apply tools in the analysis and study of proteins, interpret data and appreciate the applications of genomics in the industrial and medical field. Students will also study the function of genes and their interaction within a genome, the human genome project, bioinformatics and gene therapy.
Cell & Molecular Biology (NP-013211)
This module provides an introduction to basic cell & molecular biology concepts. It equips students with an understanding of cell biology, including structure and function of cells and its organelles, cellular transport mechanisms, cell divisions, DNA replication, central dogma of biology, basic genetic principles, and cell development.
Microbiology (NP-013212)
Lectures will cover the scope of microbiology including the types, classification and properties of bacteria, fungi and viruses. The laboratory sessions will equip students with essential skills in microbiology including aseptic technique, staining methods and methods for enumeration, culturing, maintenance and identification of microorganisms.
Pharmaceutical Microbiology (NP-013214)
The module will cover standard methods in pharmaceutical microbiology including microbiological testing of non-sterile and sterile products, preservative testing, sterilization techniques, validation of the sterilization process, environmental monitoring and viral testing and clearance. The module will also provide an overview of microorganisms typically encountered or tested for as contaminants in pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical manufacturing.
