Course Objectives

The Specialist Diploma in Analytical Science will enable professionals to deepen their skills and knowledge in chemical safety, chemical analysis such as gas chromatography, high performance liquid chromatography, water and air quality monitoring, mass spectrometry, and lastly, the conduct of effective Quality Assurance and Quality Control. 

Course Description

The Specialist Diploma in Analytical Science (SDAS) is a part-time CET course, consist of the following modules:

Trainer's Profile

Song Shiwei

Dr Song Shiwei is an experienced educator with over a decade of expertise in tertiary education, specializing in pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical manufacturing, quality control and assurance, and biotechnology research and development. Before embarking on her educational career, Dr Song obtained her PhD in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering from the National University of Singapore. She also brings a wealth of industry experience from her work in multinational corporations. She has held roles in research and development and technology transfer at Codexis Singapore, headquartered in California, USA, as well as positions in technology transfer and quality control at the UK pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline.

At Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP), Dr Song provides guidance to young students in the Diploma in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and to adult learners pursuing an Advanced Diploma in Medical & Pharmaceutical Technology and a Specialist Diploma in Analytical Science. She mentors and coaches them in their future career paths in the chemical and pharmaceutical sectors. She has a passion of talent development at NP as the lead coach for the WorldSkills Competition in Chemical Laboratory Technology. Dr Song has designed and developed pharmaceutical-related modules, including biopharmaceutical production, biopharmaceutical quality control, analytical chemistry, current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMPs), and Separation Technology, etc. to equip learners with the practical knowledge and skills needed in the industry. She also provides customized workplace training for local small and medium-sized enterprises, helping them enhance their skills and build workplace learning capabilities.

Dr Song is an ACLP (Advanced Certificate in Learning and Performance) certified Adult Educator (Singapore University of Social Sciences) and has received certifications including Learning Solution Design, Workplace Learning Delivery (Institute of Adult Learning), Human-Centered Design Practitioner (LUMA Institute), and Training Needs and Skills Gap Analysis (Ngee Ann Polytechnic).

Prity Mukherjee

Prity has a Meng (Research) Chemical and Environment Engineering from National University of Singapore, Singapore, an M. Tech in Environment Planning from Centre For Environment Planning & Technology, India and a Bachelor of Engineering, Environmental Engineering from Gujarat University, India.

She is an ACTA certified Adult Educator (Institute of Adult Learning, Singapore).

An educator with over 27 years of experience, Prity has solid experience in teaching at Master’s, Bachelor’s and Diploma programs in Engineering, Technology, Applied Chemistry in Environmental Engineering, Sciences & Environmental chemistry.

She has done several research projects with National Environment Agency (NEA) Singapore in the area of Air Pollution monitoring, Emission inventory and Atmospheric modelling as well as collaborates with SMEs to find Sustainable Environmental solutions to environmental issues.

At Ngee Ann Polytechnic, she has over 25 years of experience in teaching students and Adult learners in Diploma in Water and Environmental Technology Program in Air Pollution Control, Noise Pollution Control & Monitoring, Water Reclamation Technology, Advanced Water Reclamation Technology, Sewerage Systems, Solid and Hazardous Waste Management, Water and Marine Pollution and related applied Environmental Chemistry.

Prity has 5 years of teaching experience at Diploma in Applied Sciences for Environment Occupational Health and Safety, for Adult learners as Associate Lecturer, NOVO - Environmental Technology Services, Singapore for University of New Castle, Australia, Singapore Campus and University of Sunderland, UK, Singapore Campus in Master’s program in areas of Chemistry Fundamentals for Occupational Health Safety & Sciences, Classification of Hazardous Wastes with associated risk, exposure assessment, accident investigation, and Life Cycle Analysis.

Prity has been awarded Academic Award (Teaching Excellence) at Ngee Ann Polytechnic 3 times.

Prity leads the World Skills Team at School of Life Sciences and Chemical Technology in the domain areas of professional skills in Water Technology and Chemical Laboratory Techniques. She works as an Expert in Technical Work Group in the Water Technology Skills area, with World Skills, Singapore.

She has several publications in highly reputed Journals; Atmospheric Environment, Chemosphere, Journal of Hazardous Materials, Chemical Engineering Technology & others.

Li Cunben

Educator, Researcher, Certificated Adult Trainer
Dr Li holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Chemical and Biomedical Engineering from Nanyang Technological University. His academic journey has equipped him with an understanding of chemical and biomedical processes, setting a strong foundation for his research and teaching career.

With expertise in chemical separation and analysis, polymer synthesis and application, and chemical process design and optimization, Dr Li has led and completed various research projects, including paint development for different applications, separation of milk protein, and drug delivery with a biopolymer matrix. Currently, he is involved in a research project focused on the application of biomass.  

Dr Li’s professional experience spans over a decade of teaching at Institutes of Higher Learning in Singapore. Notably, at Ngee Ann Polytechnic, he has taught multiple modules for the Diploma in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, such as Engineering Mathematics, Analytical Chemistry, Analysis of Chemical Engineering Processes, and Sustainable Process Design. Additionally, Dr Li is an ACTA certified Adult Educator (Institute of Adult Learning, Singapore).

In addition to his teaching role, Dr Li is working with various organisations to manage the internship programme and the Work-Study programme.

Mariam Mathew

  • Master of Engineering (Chemical Engineering) - National University of Singapore,

  • Bachelor of Technology (Chemical Engineering) - University of Calicut.

In addition, she has certifications as:

- Human-Centred Design Practitioner (LUMA Institute).

Mariam has more than 20 years of experience with applied environmental projects in the areas of water quality assessment, assessment, treatment and resource recovery from hazardous waste streams. More details can be found at: Ms Mariam Mathew (np.edu.sg)

Mariam is currently the Assistant Director (CET) with the School of Life Sciences and Chemical Technology. Prior to taking in this role, she was Course Chair for the Diploma in Environmental and Water Technology. Her students and projects have received recognition at various platforms such as Cities of Love Awards, HSBC NYAA Awards, Earthwatch Expeditions and the Bayer Young Environmental Envoy Awards. She was chairperson of the National Organising Committee for the Singapore Junior Water Prize competition from 2016 to 2023. She is recipient of a National Day Commendation Medal (2018) and School Teaching Awards in 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2012.

Mariam is a lecturer with the School of Life Sciences and Chemical Technology at Ngee Ann Polytechnic. and provides training at diploma and post diploma levels. She has been involved in training for the Singapore Water Association (SWA) members, staff of the National Environment Agency, PUB and Institute of Technical Education.

Specialist Diploma in Analytical Science

Post-Diploma Certificate in Advanced Analytical Methods
Analytical Applications and Management 2 (NP-011738)
This module aims to equip participants with the knowledge and skills to perform routine laboratory analysis and administrative work. Topics relevant to a career in analytical science such as laboratory housekeeping, quality documentation, sample analysis and QA/QC procedures will be covered. Candidates will complete an assignment which requires them to analyze and reflect on the skills and competencies of an analytical science-related job.
Liquid Chromatography (NP-011477)
This module will cover the detailed operations of HPLC, UHPLC, and its associated detectors (DAD, UV, Rl, etc), from method development (sample preparation, column selection, solvent selection, gradients, baseline correction), data analysis (internal and external standards, normalization) to method validation and troubleshooting. Participants will have industrial case studies to discuss and troubleshoot, samples to analyze and report to prepare as a group project.
Mass Spectrometry (NP-011478)
This module will cover the principles of mass spectrometry and its instrumentation in LC-MS, GC-MS, ICP-MS and MS-MS. Participants will also learn about the interpretation of mass spectra and the application of mass spectrometry in fields such as chemical and petrochemical, pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical, environmental and water and forensic chemistry.
Quality Assurance & Quality Control (NP-011479)
This module will introduce GLP (Good Laboratory Practices), quality standards, standard templates, CAPA (corrective and preventive action), change control and deviations. Participants will also learn about the statistical analysis of laboratory data (SPC and SQC) and the writing of SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures), protocols and summary reports.
Post-Diploma Certificate in Environmental & Chemical Analyses
Analytical Applications and Management 1 (NP-011473)
This module aims to equip participants with the knowledge and skills to perform routine laboratory analysis and administrative work. Topics relevant to a career in analytical science such as laboratory housekeeping, quality documentation, sample analysis and QA/QC procedures will be covered. Chemical Safety (NP-011474)
This module will cover the competencies required to understand the effects of hazardous substances on the body, identification of the sources of hazardous substances and the implementation of control measures to manage the risks associated with these substances.
Topics covered will include GHS system, safety datasheets, risk assessment and management, chemical hazard communication, PPE, engineering control, and chemical management systems.
Environmental Testing (NP-011476)
This practice-oriented module introduces students to key aspects of environmental & water chemistry and air quality monitoring for application in pollution control, resource recovery and water & wastewater treatment.
Gas Chromatography (NP-011475)
This module will cover the detailed operations of Gas Chromatography from method development (oven temperature, headspace, calibration, optimization, derivatization), data analysis (internal and external standards, normalization) to method validation and troubleshooting. The selection, maintenance and optimization of detectors (TCP, FlO, etc) will be covered too.
