Course Objectives

The course aims to prepare opticians who do not meet the GCE ‘O’ Level examination requirements with foundation in academic writing, mathematics, and science which will prepare them for their progression to the Part-time Diploma in Optometry course.

Course Description

The Certificate in Bridging Studies for Opticians (CBSO) course is a 135-hour part-time course. Classes are scheduled on three to four weekdays mornings per week.

Topics covered are:
1) Academic Writing and Presentation Skills (45 hours)
2) Mathematics for Optometric Practice (45 hours)
3) Foundations of Biology, Physics, and Chemistry for Optometry (45 hours)

Certificate in Bridging Studies for Opticians
Academic Writing and Presentation Skills (NP-010952)
This module trains students in the skills of academic research, writing, and presentation to meet the needs of polytechnic education. Students will be involved in writing exercises, class discussions and mini lectures, which are contextualised in contemporary issues on health and medical disciplines.
Foundations of Biology, Physics, and Chemistry for Optometry (NP-CFBPCOX)
This module aims to provide students with a comprehensive foundation on the principles of basic biology with its relationship to physics and chemistry. Students will acquire fundamental knowledge to facilitate their pathway in to Diploma in Optometry.
Mathematics for Optometric Practice (NP-CMOPX)
This module aims to provide students with an understanding of the basic principles of mathematics and its application in optometric practice.

Entry Requirements

Requirements: 
1.Optometrists & Opticians Board (OOB) full registration as a refraction and dispensing optician; AND
2.Current OOB practicing certificate; AND
3.At least 3 years of relevant work experience as an optician in the optical industry; AND
4.Completed one of the opticianry certificate programmes (refer to appended table 1 below); AND
5.Pass pre-enrolment interview conducted by School of Health Sciences to determine the suitability to cope with the academic rigour
