About Course

Course Objectives

DCVCS is a knowledge and skills conversion program that will enable diploma and degree graduates to transition into the veterinary clinical industry. It equips students with skills and breadth of knowledge to enable them to find employment in organisations such as veterinary clinics, animal holding units/shelters, pre-clinical trials organisations, government agencies, animal theme parks, and associated pet-care companies.

Course Description

The Diploma (Conversion) in Veterinary Clinical Science is a 1 year part-time CET course, consist of the following modules:

Veterinary Anatomy & Physiology (NP-012546)
This module introduces the anatomy and functions of the animal body. It equips students with an understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular, respiratory, urinary, gastrointestinal, integumentary, musculoskeletal, nervous, endocrine, and reproductive systems.
Veterinary Diseases & Pathology (NP-012545)
This module will cover the pathogenic mechanisms and morphological aspects of common veterinary bacterial, fungal, viral, parasitic and metabolic diseases. Emphasis will be on common diseases affecting small animals in general practice. This module will also train students in the skills necessary for the investigation and diagnosis of animal diseases, necropsies, and basic histopathology.
Veterinary Professional Essentials (NP-012544)
In this module, students will learn about the proper handling and restraint and fundamental principles underlying behavior of small animals commonly seen in general practice. Students will learn the knowledge and skills to identify aggression, fear, and distress in animals, and perform proper husbandry of small animals. Students will learn about occupational health and safety hazards associated with veterinary clinics. They develop and implement measures for a comprehensive health and safety program through proper risk assessment and standard operating procedures. Students will learn the basics of effective communication, service orientation, and client relationship skills. The module will also provide students with an understanding of the employment landscape within the veterinary industry with regards to working hours, career progression, job satisfaction, and work sustainability.
Post-Diploma Certificate in Fundamentals of Veterinary Clinical Science
Veterinary Clinical Pathology & Immunology (NP-012547)
The clinical pathology component will cover aspects of blood analysis and will provide practical training in performing blood smears and carrying out blood biochemistry and complete blood count profiles. Microbiology provides students with an understanding of microorganisms of veterinary importance which cause disease in small animals seen in general practice. Standard microbial laboratory techniques involving the isolation, culture and identification bacteria (based on microbial metabolic characterization and microscopy examination) will also be covered. Immunology provides an understanding of how the immune system functions as an integrated defense system against disease. Topics include an overview of the immune system of vertebrates, innate and adaptive immunity, humoral and cell-mediated immunity, vaccination, diseases of the immune system and antibody-based therapies.
Veterinary Diagnostics, Surgical & Treatment Procedures (NP-012549)
This module covers introductory clinical diagnostics, and students will be taught how to handle common clinical cytology work, as well as learning about diagnostic imaging and diagnostic cardiology. Students will also be introduced to basic surgical and treatment principles which would include pre- and peri-operative preparations for surgery, and intra- and post-operative procedures. Management of emergencies and critical care in veterinary practice will also be briefly covered.
Veterinary Pharmacology & Toxicology (NP-012548)
This module covers the basic principles of veterinary pharmacology, pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics (absorption, distribution, metabolism, and elimination), the major drug classes and associated mechanism of action, side effects, indications and contraindications, basic anaesthesiology, and an introduction to toxicology. Students will have the opportunity to practice techniques for administration of medication, as well as perform drug calculations.

Applicants who do not meet the entry requirements may be considered for admission to the course based on evidence of at least 5 years of relevant working experience or supporting evidence of competency readiness.

Suitable applicants who are shortlisted may have to go through an interview and/or entrance test.
